I have only recently begun to identify as a transgender non-binary person, and this project was an opportunity for documenting the self. Photography provided an investigative and artistic way to explore what this new self-context means to me and how this affects (or doesn’t) my relationship with my non-binary partner. In this way, the project is also about exploring self-acceptance.

It is important for me to contribute to the representation of LGBTIQ+ people and their lives. A lack of visibility and relatable presence in media and the public eye can be isolating and makes it difficult to develop and solidify a sense of self, and of belonging to community.

In The Way We Love I invite the viewer to witness the unseen everyday domestic life and love of a gender queer couple. I wanted to reveal and represent queer and transgender relationships, which are outside many people’s realm of lived experience. This photo documentary explores ideas femininity and masculinity, domestic roles, and the non-binary space that flows between them. I also wanted to reinforce the familiar and relatable ordinary side of home life, with images that focus on love, domestic comfort, and day to day activities. I hope to challenge the perpetuated - and often misrepresented - ideas of transgender and queer people, and their values.
